Abernyte Heating Oil Collective – AHOC

AHOC is a group of like-minded people in Abernyte and along the Carse who buy their heating oil collectively.

What are the benefits of AHOC and how does it work?

  • Members pay significantly less for their heating oil: achieved from our buying power and the cost savings on transport and admin by our chosen oil supplier.
  • The average user saved over £184 per year (June 2020 - August 2024).
  • We offer full transparency on current and historical savings for members and potential new applicants.
  • Savings on the cost of Propane gas cylinders, and fuel additives.
  • Helps the environment by reducing road tanker miles.
  • More security of supply in extreme weather conditions: remember the winter of 2009/2010!
  • Membership is free – we are a not-for-profit organisation run by local volunteers within Abernyte Community Interest Company.
  • Established over 14 years ago, AHOC has grown to be a group of over 90 like-minded residents in and around Abernyte who buy their heating oil and gas cylinders as a group.
  • Depending on seasonal weather and member demand, we now offer 7 delivery opportunities: mid-October, early December, mid-January, late February, April, June and August.

Our current supply agreement has saved our members an average of 7.5 pence per litre (June 2022 to August 2024) compare with the average price of the 8 big local alternative suppliers on the same day we made our group purchases. AHOC pays an agreed margin per litre to the supplier over the ex-refinery price of Kero (heating oil). This price varies daily according to wholesale prices which are independently published.

Johnston Oils is our current supplier. The group currently has over 90 members and buys over 200,000 litres annually, which gives us real buying power. AHOC’s community deliveries also help to reduce road tanker miles, which is good for the community and the environment.

Members buy according to their individual needs using our online system. Under no circumstances would we wish to see a member run out of fuel and, providing the AHOC group buyer cannot justify a group fill, the member is at liberty to contact the supplier independently and make his or her own arrangements for a one-off/emergency delivery.

There are currently no surcharges for deliveries between 500 and 999 litres or for households with restricted access that require a small 4-wheeled tanker. You only order what you need. Once a member joins, their needs soon become synchronised with the other members. Members pay the oil supplier directly.

Our independent buying group price is normally always at least 2-3p/litre better than the price offered to groups run by oil suppliers.
